WHAT IS A PORTA-DAM?

  • Sander Power Equipment Project (Holland’s PA Branch)
  • Pump Consultant – Terry K.

  • Scope: replace the freshwater intakes for Trenton Water Works Plant
  • Because the river bed was bedrock, sheeting was not an option
  • Install Porta-Dam System to permit work to done 230’ into Delaware River
  • Dam size was 230’ x 250’

PHASE 1:

  • First installed 60” Poly Pipe to supply water to the plant
  • Dewatered the dam with (2) 2760 submersible pumps , (1) 125 KW Generator, and (1) 6” and (1) 8” Diesel Pump
  • Used Auto Dialer to send alerts if the water level got too high

PHASE 2:

  • The Porta-Dam had to be extended 250’ x 150’ into the Delaware River at approximate depth of 7′
  • At high tide, water was 1′ higher than normal
  • Installed (2) 3300s 45 hp, (1) 3201 30 hp, (1) 3152 20 hp, (1) 2201 60 hp submersible pumps
  • Installed (2) 8” PA8 pumps, (1) 6” PA6 pump, (2) 125 KW Diesel Generators plus hoses and pipe

ON FEBRUARY 1ST, THE DAM COLLAPSED FROM ICE

THE NEXT DAY, THE CUSTOMER REMOVED ALL EQUIPMENT

The customer contracted with commercial diving company to remove all equipment from the depths of the Delaware River, and contracted an environmental company to remove all fluids from the diesel equipment.

Sander Power Equipment Was Challenged

  • All the Diesel Equipment was a total loss due to them running when the dam collapsed.
  • Submersible Pumps were thoroughly examined and tested.  Everything tested well, except the cables and controls, so they were removed and new ones installed.
  • Insurance claims were filed, and Sander received $156K, but that didn’t come close to what was lost.

PHASE 3:

  • Customer had the Porta-Dam rebuilt in 2 weeks, and new earth dam was also installed around the porta-dam.
  • Porta-dam was pushed back an additional 50’ because of under mining from the collapse.
  • In late February, Sander began to install equipment:
  • (2) 3300’s 45 hp
  • (1) 3300 50 hp
  • (2) 2201’s 50 hp
  • (1) 3152 20hp
  • (2) Gorman Rupp PA 12
  • (2) Gorman Rupp PA 12
  • (1) Airman 125 Generator
  • (1) Airman 150 Generator
  • (1) MQ Power 220 Generator
  • (2) 500 Gallon Fuel Cubes

  • (1000’) 12” pipe / hose

  • (1500’) 8” hose

  • (600’) 6” hose

  • (1) Auto Dialer High Level
