Benefits vs. Competitor Dual Vacuum Wellpoint Pumps

  1. Our Rotary Lobe pumps are simple and reliable because the system consists of an engine, a gear reducer, and our LobePro pump end
  2. Our Rotary Lobe pumps self-prime to 25’ with a strong vacuum
  3. Centrifugal pumps are adversely affected by entrained air, inadequate Net Positive Suction Head (NPSH) or by not operating within 10% of their best efficiency point (BEP). In contrast, our pumps will happily pump air and water, have low suction requirements and operation at any points within their operating range is fine

Positive Displacement (PD)  Rotary Lobe Pumps for Sludge, Mud, & Slurries

Sludge

According to Waste Water columnist "Dr Sludge", users are dissatisfied with their sludge pump in approx 60% of all new installations.  He attributes this primarily to poor engineering and installation. Our sister company, LobePro is committed to making sure our sludge pumps are a success in our customers. Why would our pump be a success when 60% of users are dissatisfied with their sludge pump?

  • First of all, our pump is a Positive Displacement (PD) Pump. Only Positive Displacement Pumps are suitable for pumping sludge with greater than 3% solids according to a Hydraulic Institute study. If you don’t select a positive displacement pump for your sludge application you will have problems
  • Second, we use a Rotary Lobe positive displacement pump which is compact, easy to maintain and easy and inexpensive to repair and can be run dry for a period of time. Some positive displacement pump types, such as progressive cavity pumps, take up a lot of space, are expensive and difficult to repair, and cannot be run dry. This  naturally causes user dissatisfaction
  • Third, we have an experienced Sludge Engineering staff available for consultation. Sludge is tricky stuff to pump. If the proper sludge engineering is not done, the wrong pump, motor, pipe size and pipe layout can easily be selected. This is another source of dissatisfaction
  • Fourth, because of experience and attention to detail, we manufacture the most reliable rotary lobe pump. Holland Pump has put over 1.5 million hours on its fleet of 250 rotary lobe rental pumps. This gives us feedback on problems and a safe place to field test solutions. Our competitors don’t have this opportunity and it shows

Muds & Slurries

Mud and slurries containing hard solids not greater than 3 mm (1/8”) are frequently best pumped by a Positive Displacement (PD) Pump. In fact, the Hydraulic Institute list 12 reasons why this is the case.

Typical applications include:

  • Bentonite slurry walls
  • Drilling fluids
  • Cement
  • Slurries for Ceramics
  • Epoxy, glue, paste and adhesives.
  • Gels

Here is a quick review of the reasons why knowledgeable users invest in our pumps for slurries and mud:

  1. Can provide a constant flow at pressures up to 150 PSI or constant pressure at different flow rates
  2. Low fluid shear
  3. Can pump a mixture of air and fluid successfully.
  4. Are generally much more energy efficient than centrifugal pumps because of the low amount of slip
  5. Superior for pumping sludge, mud and thick fluids.
  6. Can handle abrasives well because of slow speed and because lobes do not touch after a short break in period
  7. Can run dry for a period of time because seals are oil cooled and lobes do not touch
  8. Flow is near pulseless because of the helix lobe design.
  9. Can self prime up to 25 ft depending on the fluid. Slurries and Mud frequently clog auto priming mechanism

Rotary Lobe Pumps are used extensively in many industries in place of progressive cavity pumps (because of their small size, low cost maintenance-in-place capability and ability to run dry) and centrifugal pumps (because of their ability to handle small diameter solids and abrasives, and their ability to pump a measured flow at a constant pressure at any pump rpm with low shear and little or no pulsation). In addition, rotary lobe pumps are more energy efficient than centrifugal pumps. This is important since studies show that energy costs are typically 80-87% of total lifetime pump costs.
